Film industry unit: major film studio case study prompts

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MAJOR studio research: choose one of the 'major six' studios as your case study. Warner Bros has been popular one in the past, but any of the 6 is fine.
1. Research Media Ownership: what conglomerate is it owned by? What other companies exist within the conglomerate which might be useful when the studio is marketing their film? Note down anything about the company of importance.

2. Film case studies: choose 3 films that were produced by your studio (either on their own or as a co-production). These 3 films should all be from within the last 5 years, so 2008 onwards, and ideally one of them will be being marketed currently (maybe your studio is starting to promote their big summer blockbuster now?)

Research the following about each film:

PRODUCTION: what was the production budget? Did it work with any other companies? 3Does it use 3D? CGI/animation? Anything new or interesting about the way the film was produced? Does it use stars/names to attract an audience? Etc.

DISTRIBUTION: Can you find out the distribution budget? Was it distributed by/with another company/companies? How was it marketed? Any viral marketing? Try to gather as many examples as you can- posters, billboards, links to trailers, any articles in the press etc. Also, if applicable, find examples of official merchandise, plus any 'tie-ins' with other products (like McDonalds Happy Meal, Mercedes etc).

EXHIBITION: What formats is the film available in? DVD, Blu-ray, download, streaming etc? Is it currently on Netflix, Lovefilm, Itunes, Blinkbox etc?

FACTS AND FIGURES: Box office takings to date- UK, ‘domestic’ (the US) and global figures.

Put this research together in a clear, accessible way that you can easily work from now, and revise from in the near future.

Blog reminder

Hello wonderful people!

I'm conscious that we're getting to the sharp end of this project now so I wanted to remind you again that your evaluation must be a separate blog to all of your research and planning! The exam board asks for this, so if you've already started your evaluation on your original blog, you will need to set up a new blog URL and copy it over to this. On Monday I'll take down the address for these.

You are submitting your finished magazine pages on the blog too- it would make sense to post these at the start of your new blog, before you start evaluating.

If anyone sees this who's in touch with Ben, could you please ask him to me email me his new blog address asap to eveblakeman@gmail.com - thanks.

I hope you've all had a good break. See you on Monday!

Miss B
